Antoniev
Monastery (also known as St. Anthony's Monastery)
that dates from the early 12th century...
...and is situated at one
of the most picturesque locations in the city. According to legend, the
monastery was founded by Anthony the Roman who discarded all his valuable
possessions when he became a monk by throwing them in the sea. But some years
after he established the monastery, the local fishermen caught the barrel with
the riches the monk had disposed of, and used the found money to build a
church. The church that was built is believed to be the Cathedral of the
Nativity of Our Lady, that dates from 1117. In 1925 it was decorated with
beautiful bright and rich-colored frescoes which are considered to be the most
extensive work of wall painting that dates from the 12th century.
